Rob Colgate, a seventh-grade student at Pope John XXIII and intern at the Evanston RoundTable, won first-place at the Knights of Columbus State Spelling Bee, held April 10 in Springfield. Forty contestants competed in 12 rounds, lasting more than two hours.

After an impressive demonstration of spelling skills and nine rounds, there were three spellers left.

In the tenth round, all three mis-spelled, so they went to an eleventh round. Rob spelled “beguine” correctly while the other two spellers missed “mitomycin” and “streuselkuchen.” Rob then had to spell “camaraderie” correctly to seal the win.
