Craig Romon Smith Jr. was fatally shot in the 1000 block of Darrow Avenue on May 20, said Commander Tom Guether, public information officer of the Evanston Police Department.

Police arrived at the 1000 block of Darrow on May 20 at approximately 11:36 p.m., said the Commander. When they arrived, they found Mr. Smith had sustained a gun shot wound to the head area and was unresponsive. At about that time, police received information that a second person had arrived at a local hospital, with multiple gun shot wounds. Preliminary investigation determined that this person was also involved in this same shooting incident, the Commander said.

Subsequent police interviews with witnesses revealed that five persons began to argue in front of 1039 Darrow Ave. This argument then turned into a physical confrontation between Smith and another person. During a struggle, a handgun was produced, which resulted in Mr. Smith’s being fatally shot and a second subject sustaining multiple gun shot wounds to the body, said the Commander.

Evanston Police continue to investigate this incident working closely with the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force and the Cook County States Attorney. On May 25, Cmdr. Guenther told the RoundTable police were “tying up some invesitgative initiatives” and that no one had yet been arrested or charged.
