The District 202 school board voted to extend by two years Superintendent Eric Witherspoon’s contract, which was already in place until 2013.
The vote was 6-1 with board member Gretchen Livingston casting the opposing vote.  Minutes for the May 10th meeting indicated that Ms. Livingston opposed the extension because she had been on the board for less than a year and there are still 2 1/2 years on the Superintendent’s contract.  She also cited the difficult economic times.
The contract extension also includes a 2% increase in Dr. Witherspoon’s base salary, for an annual total of $224,519, according to William Stafford, Chief Financial Officer.  Dr. Witherspoon will still receive a 20% annuity and the payment of about 10% of his salary to the Teacher Retirement System will also stay the same.
Vice-President Jane Colleton voted in favor of extending the contract because “we need Dr. Witherspoon’s leadership for a long time, his hand is needed in our work with equity” according to meeting minutes.
