Ongoing Evanston community collaborations to renovate Firemen’s Park (Simpson Street at Maple Avenue), in advance of the planned July 22 memorial celebration, have prompted support from the Evanston Fire Department, local corporations and Northwestern University.  The park features include a memorial to fallen firefighters Marty Leoni, George Stiles and William Craig and a 1927 Seagrave Standard fire engine. The Maltese Cross that topped the monument had been stolen and the engine, despite some efforts by a group of Eagle Scouts to repaint it, had become a safety concern.

Earlier this spring, the Northwestern University Engineering Design and Communications Class accepted fire truck renovation planning as one of its spring semester projects, making the expertise of students Ethan Romba, Michael Sherer, Hansol Bang, and Samer Bibi available to collaborate with neighbors, City staff and local firefighters to align the truck with national playground safety standards.

The Firefighters Association is selling personalized brick pavers and park benches for the pathway and patio, hoping to raise $17,000. All proceeds directly benefit efforts to rejuvenate the park. Pavers can be purchased, and contributions are being accepted. Go to for details.
