A year-end staple of the school since 2007, the walk changed a year later, when teacher Sandy McDermott died unexpectedly.  The walk-a-thon has been renamed “Nichols has  Heart – A Walk-a-thon in Memory of Sandy McDermott.” Students raised more than $20,000 last year. Half of the proceeds were shared between the American Heart Association and the Nichols School PTA. The other half was dedicated to a scholarship fund in Ms. McDermott’s name. Last year the Sandy McDermott Scholarship Committee awarded two $1,000 scholarships to Evanston Township High School seniors who had attended Nichols School.

Last week Ellie Makoul and Carla Martinez of the Nichols Jedi team sold brownies and lemonade at their stand on the corner of Greenleaf Street and Florence Avenue to raise funds for the walk-a-thon.
