Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz has appointed Deputy Chief Greg Klaiber to the position of Interim Chief of Evanston’s Fire and Life Safety Services.This appointment temporarily fills the vacancy recently created by the retirement of Chief Allan Berkowsky. A nation-wide search is underway to permanently fill the position.

Deputy Chief Klaiber is an Evanston resident and a graduate of Evanston Township High School. As a 25-year veteran of the Department he rose through the ranks from Firefighter/Paramedic, Captain, Division Chief and finally to Deputy Chief. The Deputy Chief is second in command of Evanston Fire and Life Safety Services.

Chief Klaiber was named Deputy Chief back in February and prior to that served as the Division Chief in charge of Emergency Medical Services and Specialty Teams including Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue and the Water Rescue/Recovery Teams.

In addition to his duties with the City of Evanston, Deputy Chief Klaiber was a School Board Member for District 65 (1999-2003), is a trustee of the Evanston Fourth of July Association and was an active participant in Evanston’s Youth Baseball Association. He holds a Master’s Degree in Cardiac Rehabilitation and a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology.

Applicants will be able to apply for the position of Chief of Fire and Life Safety Services until June 21, 2010. The city is looking to have the position filled by September 1, 2010.
