Word on the street is that the City recently shut down a lemonade stand in front of one of the branch libraries, where children were raising money to help save them. Word from Evonda Thomas, director of the City’s Health Department is slightly different: that a City employee, not in the health department, told the librarian that the stand needed a permit and that the librarian then shut down the stand.

Since then, Ms. Thomas says, the health department has been working with the EPL Friends to issue the appropriate permits, and the stands should be open, properly permitted, this weekend. She also said that technically all lemonade stands should have a permit, though the City has no plans to send inspectors out in search of lemonade stands on neighborhood sidewalks every weekend.

Still, do we really need this layer of bureaucracy?
