Visitors to Custer’s Last Stand are happy to be there; smiles greet you wherever you go. From the historic Main St. and Chicago Ave. store buildings to tree lined Washington St. area, you can find all kinds of things to please. 250 Artists and craftspeople from across the nation come together on the third weekend of June every year to exhibit and sell paintings, ceramics, pottery, photographs, jewelry, graphic arts, wearable art, country and home craft, antiques and collectables. They are joined by 150 local businesses and commercial exhibitors who put on an old fashioned Sidewalk Sale.
Mark Damisch Classical Piano Sat. at EPL
Pianist Mark Damisch has performed in good will tours and fundraisers in Iceland, Japan, France, Italy, Greece, England, Russia, and Israel. Come hear the internationally known artist with “bravura to spare” as he performs the music of Bach, Gershwin, Chopin, Schumann, and Beethoven. Saturday, June 19 at 2 p.m. at the Main Library, 1703 Orrington Ave. in the Community Meeting Room.
Poetry Slam/Karaoke Family Night at Fleetwood-Jourdain Center Sat.
Tired of the same old board games on Saturday evening? Gather family members and come to Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre’s new “Family Karaoke and Poetry Slam Saturdays.” The fun takes place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on June 19.
Bring your best singing voice and most slammin’ poems to Fleetwood-Jourdain Center, 1655 Foster St. for two hours of a downright groovy time, full of love, peace and SOUL!
Admission is just $5.00 for your entire family, whether that’s two people or 20! If you come hungry, you can purchase our pizza slice/soft drink combo for just $1.50.
This Father’s Day canoe trip is 9:30 a.m.-noon on Sun., June 20 at the Ecology Center, 2024 McCormick Blvd. This excursion is for ages 5 and older. Fees vary by age and membership in the Evanston Environmental Association. Basic canoe instruction and safety is covered before heading out. Come watch the race! Now in its eleventh year, the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate is comprised of chip-timed 5K and 10K runs, a 5K walk and a fun youth mile as well as on field refreshments, entertainment and fun field activities for the whole family. June 20 at Long Field starting at 7:30 a.m.
Starlight Concert Series Continues June 22 & 24
The City of Evanston’s 2010 Starlight Concert Series features a dozen free performances at four park locations on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the summer. Marvin Tate’s all-star collective, Baby Alright, whoops it up with funky soul covers from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22 at Harbert Park (Dempster St. at McDaniel Ave.).
Andre Williams & the Goldstars then light up the night at James Park on Thursday, June 24, also from 7:30-9 p.m. Since hitting the Top 10 with “Bacon Fat” more than 50 years ago, he’s had his ups and downs, but “Williams, 73, still has it, and people still love it” (Chicago Reader).
