The North and South branches of the Evanston Public Library are safe through next February at least, with the possibility of long-term, sustainable funding in the works. City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz said that absent contrary direction from the Council he would begin the process of closing the branch libraries by Aug. 1 and shutter them completely on or before Aug. 31.

Council then heard reports from the Sustainability Task Force of the Library Board and the Evanston Public Library Friends and voted to continue library operations using funds collected by the Friends. Council directed the City Manager to examine the Library Board’s findings and report back to the Council with possible long-term funding solutions.

According to numerous speakers, including the City Manager, any long-term plan would include the relocation of the South Branch to a site less in need of improvements and plans for a West Evanston library presence.
