Evanston firefighters responded to a fire emergency call at 415 Howard St., an 18-story building, on Aug. 5 shortly after 9 p.m., said Division Chief Thomas Janetske of the Evanston Fire Department. When they arrived, they found that a kitchen fire on the 12th floor of the building had been extinguished by the building’s fire sprinkler system. More than one-hundred residents had been evacuated temporarily while firefighters worked to remove smoke from several floors and to control water that was flowing from the sprinklers.
Water damaged several floors below the unit and firefighters worked with building staff to protect belongings and remove water, said Chief Janetske. By about 10 p.m., most residents had returned home and no injuries had been reported. The fire was contained in the kitchen and extinguished without spread to other areas. Assistance was provided to the one displaced resident.
