Rick Eanes is hip-high in roses this time of year as gardener for Evanston’s Merrick Rose Garden, but his favorite is the peony-sized Yves Piaget, a fragrant French pink hybrid tea from Meilland.
A geography major in college, he has become a professional gardener through learning by doing. He spent six years maintaining the grounds at North Park College in Chicago before joining the Evanston Parks Department.
Mr. Eanes has been tending the rose garden for 12 seasons, long enough for his two kids, Greta and Spencer, both students at Chute Middle School, to just call it “Daddy’s rose garden.”
He invites everyone to come see the garden in its end-of-season splendor.
