The Flying Fish swim team raises $98,000 to benefit our Evanston/NorthShore Community

As the 2009/10 swim season comes to a close, the Flying Fish swim team celebrates its successes beyond the scoreboard. We’re not just about strong strokes; we’re also about strong character. We are committed to regularly supporting our community through participation in community projects and fundraising activities. Our largest fundraising activity is our annual swim marathon. This year we would like to thank the 451 swimmers who swam a total of 47,510 lengths for a grand total of $98,350 raised in sponsorships (an increase of more than 45% of average sponsorships per swimmer over 2009!). We would also like to thank the generous sponsors who pledged their support.

The funds raised by the Flying Fish swim marathon help the YWCA Evanston/North Shore to continue to provide healthy aquatic programming, bring Violence Prevention and Building Healthy Relationship programming to our schools, and provide shelter and support to women and children in the YWCA’s Domestic Violence Services.

Additional Flying Fish community services includes annual participation in the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate, support of the YWomen Leadership Awards, contributions to clothing and Helping Hands holiday drives for Mary Lou’s Place, adoption of rooms at the shelter and planting/caretaking of gardens on the property, and planning parties and activities for the children in the shelter.
