Northwestern Athletic Director Jim Phillips announced during the “Paint the Town Purple” pep rally yesterday afternoon that Lord Stanley’s Cup would be at mid-field before the Northwestern-Central Michigan game Saturday morning.  The Championship Cup, won by the Chicago Blackhawks earlier this year, travels with the winning team during the offseason.

According to Northwestern’s website, the Stanley Cup will be at Ryan Field to honor Blackhawks’ Chairman Rocky Wirtz, a 1975 NU grad, and Blackhawks’ President John McDonough, who while not an NU grad is a frequent lecturer on campus and a Faculty Advisory Board member for the school’s sports administration masters program.

The championship trophy will fit right in at Ryan Field, said Mr. Phillips, the home of a championship caliber football team. Saturday is Evanston Day, with discount tickets available for Evanston residents. Along with the ticket comes a chance to see the Stanley Cup, one of the most prized trophies in the sports world. The Cup will be on the field between 10:30 and 11 a.m., when the game kicks off.
