Helen Heyrman will be honored at SASI’s annual benefit, “The Ruby Slipper Event: There’s No Place Like Home.” “Helen is not only a former board member and dear friend of SASI, [Services for Adults Staying in Their Homes], she was a leading advocate for seniors throughout her entire career,” acknowledges SASI Board President Ellen Browne. “We are pleased to recognize her vision and compassion for older adults – and celebrate her 90th birthday with her.”

A two-time recipient of the Governor’s Awards for Excellence, a past delegate to the White House Conference on Aging and past president of the Illinois Gerontology Consortium, Ms. Heyrman has received numerous awards for her work on behalf of older adults. She was the first director of the nation’s earliest home care association, the Illinois Homecare & Hospice Council, which established the Helen Heyrman Leadership Award.

Ms. Heyrman has lived in Evanston since 1960, with her husband, Don, who recently passed away. “They were committed to causes from the local to the international level” notes Browne, “and helped make Evanston the vibrant community it is today.” Helen currently resides at Westminster Place, where she chairs the Highlands Activities Council.
