NorthShore University HealthSystem’s (NorthShore) four hospitals – Evanston, Glenbrook, Highland Park and Skokie – have been named to the Leapfrog Group’s Top Hospitals List for 2010. The announcement came at Leapfrog’s 10th anniversary meeting in Washington, D.C.
“We are very pleased to be recognized as the first system in Illinois to receive this honor,” said Mark R. Neaman, president and CEO of NorthShore. “This remarkable award further validates our long-term commitment to achieve high-quality care and exceptional patient experiences. Such an honor is truly a reflection of the excellence that exists across NorthShore University HealthSystem.”
NorthShore’s four hospitals were among 65 selected from a field of nearly 1,200 hospitals that participated voluntarily in the survey. The selections were based on the results of the Leapfrog Group’s national survey that measures hospitals’ performance in crucial areas of patient safety and quality.
The survey, which launched in 2001, focuses on four critical areas of patient safety. NorthShore hospitals fulfilled the following criteria:
Fully met Leapfrog standards for implementing computer physician order entry (CPOE) systems to prevent medication errors;
Fully met Intensive Care Unit staffing standards shown to reduce ICU mortality by 40%;
Fully met stringent performance and outcomes standards for at least 50% of the high-risk surgeries and procedures (such as heart surgery) performed in that particular hospital;
Scored in the top decile in the country for efficiency – scored by Leapfrog’s Hospital Recognition Program incorporating high quality and appropriate resource use.
