Swimming non-stop for an hour each, 440 swimmers ages 7 to 14 from the YWCA Flying Fish swim team completed 625 miles in their efforts to raise $100,000 (and beat the amount they raised last year, $98,000). In recognition of the 80th anniversary of the first woman to swim the English Channel, Gertrude Ederle in 1926, the team tracked their progress on a map of the North Sea. By the time they finished last week, they had made 31 crossings of the Channel – which is 20 miles across at its narrowest point.
