The Youth Job Center of Evanston’s Summer Tutors Program celebrates its 16th year of placing youth into paid teaching assistant positions this summer. The program will begin accepting applications for the summer on Friday, April 1.
Tutors will be hired as teaching assistants in District 65 elementary school classrooms for 5 weeks beginning July 11th. The teens will work Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., as well as attend a week long training prior to the start of school to equip them with key job skills, such as how to build a resume and employer expectations. A stipend will be awarded upon completion of the program.
For youth who are looking to enter the workforce, positions such as these are an important foundation for future employment. The Illinois teen unemployment rate was up to 19 percent last summer, making tangible work experience for young people even more important than in the past.
The program acts as an invaluable resource for tutors and students alike. Tutors gain valuable job skills and experience, while acting as positive role models for their younger peers. Through tutoring and mentorship, elementary students have the opportunity to receive the personalized attention they need to foster a deep and lasting love of learning.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS IS FRIDAY, MAY 13TH, 2011.
Applications are available and may be turned in at: Youth Job Center of Evanston, 1114 Church Street or Evanston Township High School, Room W-122C.
The Youth Job Center of Evanston prepares youth ages 14-25 for success in the workplace through job-readiness, placement and employment support in partnership with employers.
