Serving on the Board of Education for ETHS for the past two years has been a remarkable opportunity to help prepare Evanston’s young people for success in the 21st century. The talent and dedication of our teachers and administrators, the marvelous accomplishments of our students, and the strong Evanston community make me confident that together, we can meet any challenge as we strive to provide an excellent education for each ETHS student.

Our Board should be bold and courageous in implementing new programs, ideas and strategies to benefit students, but we must also be careful not to fall in love with our own ideas. We must carefully evaluate all available information and make decisions based on research, data and best practices.

Teaching and learning is at the heart of what we do at ETHS. Certainly teachers have more impact on the educational experiences of students than any other factor. So hiring great teachers is one of the most important things we can do. That is why we have intensified scrutiny of new teacher applicants over the past few years. ETHS can be challenging; we must do all that we can to hire teachers who will flourish there.

People in all professions know that continuing education is key to staying at the top of one’s game. At ETHS we insist that all teachers complete professional development courses each year; it’s one reason why our faculty meet the high demands placed on them by the administrators and the Board. That more than 80 percent of ETHS teachers hold advanced degrees speaks volumes about their commitment to their profession.

These challenging economic times demand careful budgeting and capital spending. We must scrutinize every program to make sure we are getting maximum quality for every dollar spent. We must put teaching and learning first, doing all we can to protect students and classrooms from the ravages of budget cuts. My business background and chairmanship of the Board’s Audit Committee put me in position to have an important voice in how we manage resources.

Throughout this campaign the people of our community have expressed in so many ways their passion for excellence and their care for ETHS. As one who has been honored and privileged to serve in this community I am heartened by that passion. With your support I will continue to do all I can to live up to your high standards. Our children deserve nothing less.
