Foundation 65 and the PTAs of District 65 schools Chute, Dawes, Oakton and Walker are excited to be partnering to bring renowned author Nikki Grimes to Evanston on April 13 and 14.
Ms. Grimes will engage with students at each of the schools, all of whom have been reading her books and studying her writing. In preparation for Ms. Grimes’s visit, students have participated in a wide variety of activities inspired by her literature. Activities range from poetry writing, theater productions, art projects and an exploration of related music. Third-graders at Walker Elementary will write poetry to define “What is Rich” in their family, in response to reading the Dymonde Daniels books and create accompanying artwork. Ms. Grimes’ visit has inspired the creation of a movie and music centered on family themes and family portraits at Oakton Elementary.
From 6:30 to 8 p.m. on April 14 at the District 65 Hill Center, Ms. Grimes will be part of an open house that will showcase the students’ work stemming from their study and exploration of her writing. All members of the community are welcomed and encouraged to attend this open house at 1500 McDaniel Ave.
