Mary Trujillo, right, and Gay Riseborough display a model of the park they hope will be built on a vacant lot in the 1200 block of Dewey Avenue.

The Grandmother Park initiative began more than a year ago, said Ms. Riseborough, when she and Ms. Trujillo were walking their small grandsons around the area, lamenting the scarcity of parks for very young children there.  These two, the “original grandmothers,” soon recruited many of the neighbors to join the planning effort.
The model for the layout is the Monroe Tot Lot, in the 1200 block of Monroe Street, because it, too, is long and narrow, Ms. Riseborough said. Representatives of Noah’s Playground for All of Us, in Lawson Park near the lighthouse, said they will also help with advice about handicap-accessible equipment, she added. The group says it plans to turn the park over to the City once it has been completed.
