Some 35 students at Evanston Township High School joined with the Kiwanis Club of Evanston on April 23 for a combined Earth Day program.

Armed with recycling and trash bags, the teens set out along Dodge Avenue Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl and her family as well as Second Ward Alderman Peter Braithwaite and his family joined the cleanup efforts.

Some three hours and 50 bags of refuse later the workers returned to the high school, tired but pleased that their efforts had resulted in a fresh look on the street.

Jim Wolinski, president of the Kiwanis Club of Evanston, praised the young people for their commitment to making Evanston a better place to live. “This is a great project,” said Wolinski, “with both adults and teens learning to work together for the good of the community.” He also commended Mary Collins, community service coordinator at the high school for her efforts to enlist students in community service projects.
