The City’s five public swimming beaches – Lighthouse, Clark Street, Greenwood Street, Lee Street and South Boulevard – opened on June 11. A sixth beach, the dog beach, has been open since spring. Beach hours are 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., weather and beach conditions permitting; no smoking is allowed on the beaches. A daily pass or season token must be presented for beach admission.
Greenwood Street, Lee Street and Lighthouse beaches are accessible to people with disabilities.
Admission for children under age one is always free. Daily passes may be purchased at each beach entrance. Free beach days for Evanston residents will be held at Clark Street Beach on Mondays from July 11 through August 29.
During certain conditions, swimming is prohibited at one or more of Evanston’s beaches, but admittance to the beach (sandy area) is still allowed. At other times, both the water and the beach areas are closed for safety. The beach status page of the City’s website at www.cityofevanston.org. will post information about beach closing. A recorded message can be heard at 847-859-7822. The Dempster Street Beach office is open 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. The Clark Street Beach office hours are 10:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. through Sept. 5.
In addition to swimming and playing in the sand, Evanston’s lakefront offers a boat launch, kayak and sailboat rentals, kayak and sailboat lessons, kayak fishing trips and miles of sandy beaches.
