On July 7 at approximately 3:15 a.m., Evanston police officers observed three men in the 1700 block of Greenwood looking into a parked vehicle with a flashlight. When the men saw the police, they fled on foot, said Commander James Elliot of the Evanston Police Department.

Police pursued the men, and with the assistance of other police officers, apprehended two of the men, a 15 year old from Evanston and a 16 year old from Chicago. Investigators learned that the men in custody and an unidentified male had conspired to search for unlocked vehicles and enter them to steal any valuables they could locate, said the Commander. The subjects admitted to having entered vehicles in Evanston in the search for items to steal, he added.

The juveniles were charged with criminal trespass to a motor vehicle and referred to juvenile court. They were not charged with auto burglary as no property was recovered that was linked to any entered vehicle, said the Commander.
