The Foster Senior Group welcomed Bishop Joseph Perry, pictured above, to Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center on July 27 to speak about Father Augustus Tolton. His talk was entitled “From Slavery to Sainthood.”

Fr. Tolton, reportedly the first black man to be ordained in the Catholic Church in the United States, was eventually assigned to the South Side of Chicago. Fr. Tolton returned to Chicago during a heat wave in 1897 to minister to his flock. He died just days later, at age 43, of heat stroke. The Archdiocese of Chicago is promoting his canonization.
