On Aug. 6 at 9:35 p.m., members of the Evanston Police Department’s Neighborhood Enforcement Team (NET) and Tactical Unit were dispatched to 711 Reba Place (Reba Park), after receiving reports that four to five persons were drinking and smoking cannabis in the park. Upon arrival, police officers smelled cannabis and saw three males and one female with cups in their hands, said Commander Guenther, public information officer of the Evanston Police Department.

As officers approached, all four persons began to walk away. Police observed one of the men reach to his waistband, remove a silver object, and throw it into a garbage can, said Cmdr. Guenther. Officers then converged on the four persons and detained them for questioning in the field. Police officers also searched the garbage can in question and recovered a loaded 22 cal. revolver.

Police placed the man who discarded the gun under arrest; and he was later charged with four felonies relating to the unlawful possession and use of a firearm and misdemeanors of possessing open alcohol in a park and trespassing in a closed City park, said the Commander.

The other three persons were all charged with Evanston ordinance violations relating to trespassing in a closed park and alcohol consumption, he said.
