For the first time in the 17-year history of the YWCA Flying Fish swim team, two swimmers have qualified for the 2012 Olympic trials. Jane Munro of Evanston, a rising sophomore at the University of Virginia, qualified in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:03.67 while competing at the Speedo Sectional Championships in Iowa City last month. CJ Smith of Wilmette, an incoming freshman at the University of Minnesota, qualified in the 1500 free style with a time of 15:43.37 at Senior Nationals in Palo Alto, Cal. a week ago. He followed that up with a 3:59.57 in the 400 meter free at Junior Nationals, placing tenth and qualifying for the trials in that event as well.
“This is the first time any of our swimmers have approached this level, and it’s very exciting to watch,” said Flying Fish head coach Peter Caragher. “With trials still ten months away, we may even have another couple swimmers qualify.”
