Fourteen-year-old Tristan Shambee of Evanston drowned in Lake Michigan on Aug. 27. He had reportedly been swimming in an unguarded area near Wilmette’s Gillson Park.

There were reports of strong winds and waves along a lot of the shore of Lake Michigan on that day.

Tristan was reportedly found after a two-hour search by the U.S. Coast Guard and safety and rescue teams from Evanston, Wilmette and perhaps other communities. He was taken to Evanston Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Tristan was the son of Charles and Sherry Shambee; brother of Tamika Shambee (fiancée Tervalon Sargent), Taurean (Juneitha) Shambee, Tyree Shambee and Talia Shambee; grandson Alexandria McCray; uncle of Taurean Shambee, Jr., Javonna Brooks, Jordan Brooks and Joseph Sargent; and brother of Marshelle Bowman.

A notice on the website of Evanston Township High School, where Tristan would have been a freshman, said, ” We know that some students and staff members will have a very difficult time dealing with this news. … Our sympathy and thoughts are with the Shambee family.”

Grief counseling was available at ETHS on Aug. 29 to students and staff.
