The majority of burglaries occur during the day when the residents are at work and the house is unattended, and Evanston police are reporting a recent shift in home-burglary strategies: A burglar has been using the tactic of stacking outdoor furniture, tables, etc., and climbing into windows left open or unlocked.

Police recommend that anyone with outdoor furniture and windows that can be accessed by merely pulling that furniture near a window of the house and climbing up should close and lock their windows before leaving the house or going to bed. Anyone who notices that a neighbor’s outdoor furniture seems to have been moved in such a way that someone may have used it to climb on and gain access to a window is advised to call the police to have them assess the situation.
