At around 1:30 a.m. this morning, Evanston police officers spotted a woman swimming off shore at Dempster Street Beach. Police officers calls to her were ignored and she continued out into the water. They called the Evanston Fire Department to the scene.  A MABAS Dive Box was activated.  The U.S. Coast Guard and CFD helicopter and Evanston‘s Lifeguard boat were also brought to the scene.

An exhaustive and thorough search was conducted, also using sonar to locate the subject, said Fire Chief Greg Klaiber. The woman could not be located, and the Box was struck after 2.5 hours.  Firemen found the woman’s clothes and ID at the beach.  She appears to be a 49 year old resident of Chicago.  Her car was located nearby as well, said the Chief.

Updated: Just after 7 a.m. this morning, the woman, wearing little or no clothing walked into the Dempster Street beach house.  Apparently she hid somewhere while all the activity and search was being conducted, said the Chief. The Evanston Police Department is considering appropriate charges, he added.
