Martha Baumberger, 98, of Hilton Head Island and formerly of Evanston, passed away on October 2. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati, she married Robert Baumberger in 1938 to embark on a lifetime of public service, living in various communities in the U.S., Ethiopia and Iran. During the 1970s, she was elected three times to the Evanston District 65 School Board, serving as its president for a few years. After retiring to Hilton Head Island in 1978, she was elected to and chaired the Beaufort County Council (1985-86) and served as Mayor of Hilton Head (1987-89).
Martha is survived by her four children: Roger (Anne-Marie Bourbon) Bruce (Nancy); Barbara Crane and Linda Behling, nine grandchildren (Karen, George, Alex, Steve, and Paul Baumberger; Russell and Elizabeth Crane; and Ted and Tom Behling) and nine great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Hilton Head on October 29.
