A 61-year old Chicago man has been charged with a residential burglary in the 2100 block of Sherman that took place in September 2010, said Commander Tom Guenther, public information officer of the Evanston Police Department. The man was identified through DNA evidence.
When police initially investigate the burglary they learned that none of the occupants of the residence smoked cigarettes, but they noticed the smell of smoke in the apartment. The officers located a cigarette butt and submitted for DNA analysis to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab. Police were able to match the DNA to a Chicago man who was out on parole. The man was arrested and charged with one felony count of residential burglary.
