The first weekend of November found 28 of the top teams in the Illinois competing over four rounds in the Evanston Chess Tournament at Evanston Township High School.

ETHS entered two teams to give more players valuable experience and help them work toward the state competition in February. Both teams finished with a respectable 3-1 score and earned fifth- and sixth-place finishes.

Last year’s IHSA champion, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, took top honors at 4-0 on tie breaks over Northside College Prep. Chess coach Kenneth Lewandowski said, “Many of the younger ETHS players are showing the strength to complete for the top eight when it comes to State.”
