On Dec. 9 at approximately 10:05 p.m., Evanston Police responded to call that a man was shot in the 1700 block of Lyons Street. The victim, a 19-year old male, had been shot in the right leg. He initially told police that he had been shot by an unknown person and that he was a possible target of a rival gang, said Commander Jay Parott of the Evanston Police Department.
Detectives on the scene were able to determine that the alleged victim had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said the Commander. After questioning they learned from the victim that he was carrying a .32 caliber handgun in his waistband, and the weapon discharged, said the Commander.
The victim was treated at Evanston Hospital and released into police custody and charged with Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, a class 4 felony, said the Commander.
