International Jazz Hall of Fame piano artist Junior Mance returned to his hometown for a concert at The Unitarian Church of Evanston sanctuary on Jan. 14. Helping to raise the roof on this Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend were Hidé Tanaka on bass, Kim Garey on drums and Andrew Haro on baritone sax. The crowd included jazz fans from all over Chicagoland, as well as friends of Mr. Mance’s from his Evanston days and music-loving members and friends of UCE.

“It was the best homecoming I could imagine,” said Mr. Mance. “I don’t usually do encores, but something about the positive energy in that crowd turned me around.”
