The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Evanston will hold its annual kick-off event at 6:30 PM on Feb. 9 at The Rhythm Room in Century 12 Evanston Theater, 1715 Maple Avenue. Friends, neighbors, cancer survivors, caregivers and anyone int rested in learning more about Relay For Life are encouraged to attend. Past Relay For Life participants are also encouraged to come to the event.
The kick-off event offers information about the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives faster by helping people stay well, helping people get well, finding cures and fighting back. Refreshments and light appetizers will be served, and guests will have the opportunity to win prizes and learn more about the exciting activities planned for this year’s Relay For Life. Each year this event proven to be both touching and entertaining for the whole family. Past events have included face painting, theatrical performances, kickboxing and live music. Each year a luminaria ceremony is held to honor and remember those who have battled cancer.
Relay For Life is an overnight event where teams of local businesses, schools, churches, community groups and families build awareness and raise funds. While the main objective of Relay For Life is to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, the event helps spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer and unite a community in the fight against cancer. Julie Flores, Relay For Life committee member and past participant, believes others should participate in Relay because “Cancer knows no age limit and neither does Relay.” Flores describes Relay as “the most amazing way to share life as a community.”
She further expresses, “Relay is also a time for remembering those that have lost their battle with cancer by honoring them during a luminaria ceremony. Relay is a time to share hugs and smiles and ways to fight back against cancer!”
This year’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Evanston will be held on Saturday April 21, 2012 in the field house of Evanston Township High School.
Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, secure community support, coordinate logistics, obtain refreshments and prizes, assist with publicity and plan entertainment activities for this exciting and energizing event. Community members are the key to making each Relay a success. Last year, Evanston’s Relay gained recognition within the region and Relay For Life of Evanston strives to keep the positive momentum going.
