The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) held its state tournament February 10-11, 2012 with a total of 125 teams competing. The ETHS Chess Team earned a 6-1 record for an 8th place finish at the IHSA competition.

The team averaged more than 50 points per match for the weekend and was in contention for second place until the tie-breaks put other strong teams slightly ahead. Ken Lewandowski, coach for the ETHS Chess Team, expressed his pride in the overall effort and stated, “The team was very supportive of each other all weekend (analyzing/suggesting etc.) and is … looking forward to next season.” This continues the stretch of 20-plus years that ETHS has finished in the top 15 at the state level.

Winning individual medals for ETHS were: Ergen Rojas (senior): 3rd place on Board 3, Maddie Reiches (junior) 8th place on Board 4.
