 Updated 4/29/12. A 17-year old Evanston male was stabbed seven times while in the 7000 block of California Avenue at about 3 a.m. on April 22.

The young man got into a verbal altercation with another individual, which escalated into a physical altercation, said Police Officer Zala of the Chicago Police Department News Affairs Department. The young man was stabbed, and the offender fled, said Officer Zala. The young man was transported toSt. Francis Hospital in Evanston and was in stable condition at that time, Officer Zala said.

Chicago Police declined to provide the name of the young man. Chicago Police are continuing their investigation, Officer Zala said.

In an interview that appeared on Univsion Chicago, the young man explained how the fight, which almost cost him his life, started. “One asked me if I wanted to fight, to box. … I took off my shirt and we started fighting. Then the other guy got out a blade and started to hit me on the back, the elbow also.” He said the attackers were taller and older than he.

The young man’s mother said in the interview that the young man is an exemplary student at EvanstonTownship High School, and has played on the soccer team. He was on the honor roll when at Haven Middle School.
