AJ’s Mini Mart, located on the northwest corner of Church Street and Dodge Avenue, has been closed because of fraud in relation to alleged LINK-card fraud, Police Chief Richard Eddington said at the City-School Liaison Committee meeting on May 17. “The store was taking in stolen cell phones,” he said.

City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz said the City has revoked the business licenses of both the mini-mart and the cell-phone store around the corner.

District 202 School Board member Gretchen Livingston and District 202 Superintendent Eric Witherspoon appeared to be happy at that news. “Congratulations,” Dr. Witherspoon said. Ms. Livingston added, “This is a coup.”

Chief Eddington said he felt that the closing of both businesses would cut down on criminal activity at ETHS, because the illegal sales at the store “could have motivated kids to steal other students’ cell phones.”
