Carlos Mendez, assistant principal at Haven Middle School, will take the leadership position as the Interim Principal at Dr. Bessie Rhodes Magnet School for the coming school year.
After receiving word that Adrian Harries, principal of Rhodes school, is leaving at the end of June, Superintendent Hardy Murphy recommended the appointment of Mr. Mendez. “Mr. Mendez has demonstrated leadership as part of the Haven Middle School team,” said the Superintendent. “He is a man who is willing to listen, and, I am confident that the families of Bessie Rhodes Magnet School can rest assured that as they lose one fine leader, they are gaining another.”
Mr. Mendez was the Assistant Principal at the Albany Park Mutlicultural Academy in Chicago from March 2007 to August 2011. He also served as the Area One Math and Science Coach for Chicago Public Schools from September 2006 through March 2007. He holds a Master of Arts degree in School Leadership from Concordia University and a Master of Arts degree in Urban Teaching from Columbia College. His Bachelor of Arts degree was earned in Psychology from Florida International University.
