The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that Dempster Street will be closed, weather permitting, between Sherman Avenue and Sherman Place for approximately five days starting Friday, June 22.

The closure is required for the installation of the new Chicago Transit Authority’s Purple Line viaduct.

A detour route will be posted. Eastbound Dempster Street traffic will be directed to northbound Maple Avenue and eastbound Greenwood Street to reconnect with Dempster Street via southbound Chicago Avenue. Westbound Dempster Street traffic will be directed to northbound Chicago Avenue and westbound Lake Street to reconnect with Dempster Street via southbound Oak Avenue.

Motorists should expect delays and allow extra time for trips through this area. Please obey the speed limit, observe closure signs and remain alert for workers.

The closure is scheduled to begin at noon on June 22 and end by 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26.
