School’s out, and the kids are at the Evanston Public Library.
Paper gingerbread folk decorate the front window of the North Branch, each one representing a player eating up books in this year’s summer reading game with the theme, “Reading is So Delicious.”
As early as June 11, North Branch was “crazy busy,” said Connie Heneghan, head of neighborhood services. “Kids were lined up at the door when we opened at 10. We had 65 register for the game and 86 playing that day.” June 12 was just about the same, she said.
All told, by the end of the day on June 12, North Branch had 440 young readers signed up and the library system as a whole had 2,017. Registration is still open. Besides the North Branch, kids can participate at the Main Branch, the Mighty Twig, Robert Crown and Fleetwood-Jourdain recreation centers and the Reading Stop at 1900 A Dempster St. in Evanston Plaza (at Dodge Avenue).
