At about 2:45 a.m. on July 7, Evanston Police were called to the parking lot of the Jewel Food store at 2485 Howard St. in reference to a carjacking, according to a statement from the Evanston Police Department. There, the police officers learned that the 87-year-old male victim had fallen asleep in his vehicle, to be awakened by a male teen knocking on his window. The teen ordered the man out of his vehicle, according to the police, and when the victim failed to comply, the teen, accompanied by two other male teens, physically removed the victim from his vehicle. With keys still in the ignition, all three teens entered the vehicle and drove from the parking lot. The victim was not injured, according to the police.

A description of the suspects and vehicle was disseminated to local law enforcement agencies, and police said the victim’s vehicle was later recovered by the Illinois State Police, abandoned and with minor damage, near the intersection of I-94 and I-55.

Police continue to investigate.
