At approximately 1:45 p.m.on July 16, a private contractor while laying an underground line for an electrical feed ruptured a two inch gas line located in the parking lot south of NorthwesternUniversity’s Patten Gym,2407 Sheridan Road, said Dwight Hohl, Division Chief Life Safety Services, Evanston Fire & Life Safety Services.
Evanston Fire & Life Safety Services responded and working in conjunction with Northwestern Public Safety and Evanston Police closed off Sheridan Road north at Lincoln Street, south to Noyes Street, said the Chief Hohl.
Evanstonfiremen, with the use of gas monitors checked all the surrounding Northwestern buildings and sewer system for gas readings, which showed minimal readings. A total of twenty-one buildings were monitored and evacuated. The water plant was also monitored and found gas free, said the Chief.
Nicor Gas services personnel arrived on the scene at2:53 p.m.and proceeded to set up operations to secure the ruptured gas line. No city services or residents were affected. The gas line in question is a dead end line running fromSheridan Road east on to NorthwesternUniversity’s property, said the Chief.
At 4:55 p.m.Nicor Gas was still working to stop the leak. Shift Chief Muno reported at that time it should be done shortly. No injuries to civilians or fire personnel.
