Last month, 61 high school seniors and college students, mostly graduates of Evanston Township High School, were honored for scholastic achievement at the Unity Community Scholarship Recognition Reception held at the Second Baptist Church. The African American students received scholarships to assist with tuition and books, and will attend a wide variety of prestigious institutions, from Stanford and Northwestern universities to historically black colleges such as Howard University and North Carolina A&T. The keynote speaker was Ashley Anderson, a former Unity Scholarship recipient, who urged the new recipients to take advantage of the whole college experience. “Play hard and study even harder,” she said.
