Evanston history question: What is the Evanston connection with this famous reindeer?
Answer: In 1939, Evanston resident Robert L. May, a copywriter at Montgomery Ward, was asked to create story in verse featuring an animal to attract customers to Ward’s stores. The ugly-duckling-type plot was Mr. May’s, and artist Denver Gillen (also employed by Ward’s) sketched the cute reindeer after the two visited the Lincoln Park Zoo for creative inspiration.
