Evanston Township High School teachers completed the first stage of an annual essay contest sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). In November, 65 ETHS juniors wrote impromptu essays on the topic of “The Influence of the Media on Society.” As part of the writing prompt, NCTE asked students to consider the global communication environment, stating that “viewers and readers hypnotized by the controlling power of the media may not realize that choices about what they see and when they see it have been made for them.”

In December, the senior Advanced Placement teachers at ETHS scored the essays and named five students whose work they deemed the best: Russell Fillmore-Brady, Natalie JacobsonGrace Phillips, Kyla Steman and Stephanie Young. They will move forward and compete for national recognition in the NCTE Awards in Writing.
