Evanston150’s Celebrate!2013 Working Group, the City of Evanston, Music Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University, Youth Organizations Umbrella (Y.O.U.) and YWCA Evanston/North Shore will kick off Evanston’s 150th anniversary year with the yearlong theme “Volunteer. Celebrate. Engage.” at community events taking place during the Jan. 19-21 Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
Community members are invited to celebrate Evanston’s rich legacy of civic engagement by taking a pledge to help meet the community’s goal of reaching 150,000 volunteer hours in 2013. Volunteer hours can be logged on the Volunteer Evanston website at www.volunteerevanston.org.
Celebrate!2013 Working Group members will hand out prizes courtesy of Andy’s Frozen Custard to attendees who sign up for the Volunteer Evanston website at the Fleetwood-Jourdain King Day celebration on Jan. 19, the Jan. 20 celebration at the Music Instittue of Chicago or the Jan. 21 Diverse Evanston Walks United march. (See King Day events, left).
Celebrate!2013 Working Group co-chair Patrick Keenan-Devlin said, “2013 marks the 30th anniversary of legislation creating a federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I can think of no better way of celebrating Evanston’s rich history of civic engagement than by launching a year of service in Evanston that honors Dr. King’s legacy, as well as shapes the future of Evanston.”
First Bank & Trust Managing Director Jay Lytle, who also serves on the Evanston150 Steering Committee, said, “The officers and staff at First Bank & Trust are committed to logging 1,000 volunteer hours in 2013.” Mr. Lytle says he hopes other organizations and businesses will follow suit. “Just imagine what we can accomplish in just one year with all of Evanston pitching in,” he adds.
Those unable to attend the kick-off events can still participate by creating an organization or individual volunteer profile at www.volunteerevanston.org and then
logging their volunteer hours throughout 2013.
