Patrick McCarthy, a resident at Misericordia Heart of Mercy on the north side of Chicago, won a gold medal in the 777 meter for speed skating on Feb. 2. He also won the bronze medal in the 500 meter and finished fourth in the 333 meter, while attending the Special Olympics World Games held Jan. 29 to Feb. 5 in Korea.

Patrick, who has Down syndrome, has been an active participant in Special Olympics since he was eight years old. He currently trains with the Evanston Speed Skating Club.
