Evanston Girl Scout Troop 24 from Haven Middle School competed in the FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics state tournament in Arlington Heights on Jan. 18-19.

In December this FLL team (named The Curious Pandas) competed as a rookie team at the regional qualifier tournament in Country Club Hills and won the Judge’s Award and was chosen to move on to the State Tournament.

The team learned to design, build and program an autonomous robot to complete “missions” related to the theme of Senior Solutions.

They also worked with mentors to develop an innovative solution to challenges that senior citizens face and presented their innovation, the Panda Band, to the judges.

Throughout the season the team learned engineering and technology skills while developing their abilities to work within a team and communicate their ideas all while learning to work within the core values of FLL.

The mission of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is “to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership.”
