Varsity athletes at Evanston Township High School (ETHS) have had much to celebrate during the fall and winter sports seasons, including the rise of the girls basketball team to the IHSA Sectional Semifinals.

After the release of first semester grades during the second week of February, ETHS celebrated the academic success of its varsity athletes as well. One hundred percent of ETHS varsity teams from the fall and winter seasons earned team GPAs above 3.0 and 14 of the 20 varsity teams achieved above a 3.4 team GPA.

“Congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches and teachers for prioritizing academics and emphasizing the power of effort to achieve their goals on the field, in the water, on the court and, most importantly, in the classroom,” remarked ETHS Athletic Director Chris Livatino.

ETHS requires students to maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) from the previous semester to be eligible for extracurricular activities such as sports. A variety of academic support programs are offered to students to help them reach their goals, including Wildkit Academy. This free Saturday support program targets specific subject areas at key times of the school year. Nine Wildkit Academy sessions are offered for the remainder of the 2012-13 school year.  “The high grade-point averages achieved by every Wildkit athletic team this year are a credit to all our student athletes and staff who highly value academic achievement,” remarked ETHS District 202 Superintendent Eric Witherspoon. “Here at ETHS we are communicating higher expectations and increased rigor for all students, and our students are meeting and exceeding those higher expectations. This is a win-win for everyone at ETHS.”
